What does pudding mean to you?
My mother used to make pease pudding, with green split peas. And sweet rice pudding that she slow-cooked for an eternity, which came out of the oven bubbling underneath its brown skin. The Christmas pudding was a real tradition, with everybody stirring and making a wish.

Dose any one know what the odds are That a norther accident will happen like the one at the saso mine?
ok this is my problem , my husband is a coal miner, and like the Sago mines they have alot of gas behind what is called sills,(at frist it was at 12%)and the fedrail mine inspector hs shut the mines down, that was two weeks ago, altho i know the imporatnce of this action my husband think that the new laws are too strict and will shut down what is left of the small mine companys down in this region., if i had hard fact that would prove the nessity of his and three other mines around here ,mabey he wouldnt be so upset.and ease his mind alittle .

I have two sago palm trees in my front yard and I have nothing in between them. They are still very small but would like some ideas on what to do with the middle. There is about 4-5 feet in between them.

What indoor plant is goodlooking and easy to care for?
I am wanting to buy a small indoor plant to have in my room but I'm not sure what to buy. I want something that looks good and is easy to care for. I live in Las Vegas, NV so that might affect what suggestions you give me. I would like something different then the average indoor plants as in another place in my apartment I have a small Moneytree. Would appreciate any advice. Would a Sago Palm be good?

How do I kill the grass/weeds that grows thru my mulch?
I have a Sago palm planted in the ground with mulch around it but the grass and weeds grow thru the mulch and I'm affraid it will eventually sufficate my palm. Can I do something besides spraying weed killer around my plant to stop the grass from growing in that area? Please tell me what you suggest?

The best thing to do - but would be a hassle at this point - is to lay down landscaping fabric before putting the mulch down. Just putting down mulch will not stop or inhibit the growth of weeds and grass. You can buy rolls of landscaping fabric at a home improvement store (like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.), and weeds will not grow through it. Since you already put mulch down, you'll have to remove the mulch, put the fabric down and replace the mulch over it. It will be a daunting task, but will save you time from constantly weeding and spraying.
Reply:I would actually go to a gardening store and ask someone that works there what product you can purchase to get rid of just the weeds around the Sago palm and not affect the roots of the actual Palm.
I have similar problems in my garden and I just end up pulling the weeds by hand, which is so time consuming! And the weeds have to be pulled by the root to actually remove them completely.

Reply:Remove the mulch and get some weed barrier (black pourous material) from your hardware or garden store. Put the weed barrier down around the tree and cover it back up with the mulch. It works great. I use it in my garden to keep the weeds down.

If the directions for your mulch call for three inches, go for five or six. With an established plant such as your Sago, the more the merrier. Good Luck!!!
Reply:Preen and Miracle grow make excellant weed killers for mulch if your using it around flowers, trees etc. You need to buy the type to use in flower beds so it doesnt kill your plants. it comes in granuale formula. Please follow the directions though! I used the Preen garden weed preventer. It goes a very long way. The only thing I found is you should probably start using it before the weeds appear(very early spring) dandillions are easier to control that way.
Reply:I used the weed stop covering that comes in a roll. I can't think of the exact name for it. But I had the same problem and I dug my mulch up, put down the covering, and recovered with mulch and it worked great!! I did it in my flower beds and it helps hold the moisture in so my plants have grown so much in the few weeks I've had it down! You just have a cut slits in it to where your plants are of course.

Reply:tomato is actually a fruit (considered to be of the citrus variety), as well as avocado (containing the most fat with olive being second in the fruit section)...a very important South American grain called Quinoa contains the most nutrients of all grains....and you absolutely cannot forget hempseeds which have the perfect balance of Amino acids which a person needs if they don´t consume any animal products (especially eggs)...another high nutrient flour is spelt (called dinkel in Germany)...I have been a vegetarian for many years, although I am not strict...sometimes in certains living conditions it is good to eat some meat (especially when living in extremely northern climates where hunting has been the sustenance throughout history)...another tip is to be very selective about which meat a person choses...commercial meat found in supermarkets have been treated with all kinds of chemicals to extend its shelf life as well added colors to make it more appealing to the consumer...all processed meat is bad for the health....

5 1/2 month old and sleep regression?
My son was sleeping at night with a 6 hour stretch and two 2 hour stretches with a quick nurse in between. It was great! Then about 3 week ago he began turning over, and then 2 week sago his teeth popped through. He now wakes every 2-3 hours and wont calm down unless I nurse him. Once he's calm he'll fall asleep by himself but I'm really struggling with the lack of sleep. I've begun making up the sleep with napping when he naps. I need some advice on how to get him back to his normal 6 hours again! I don't believe in the cry it out method. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am just writ ting to let you know that if by the time your baby is old enough and not on any growth spurts to do what ever it takes including the dreaded crying method to keep your sanity!!!

Reply:It's a shame you don't believe in the "cry out" method. What has happened is that your baby has put 2 and 2 together and found that when he cries, you come in and give him attention. So as soon as he is bored or wants attention, he cries till he gets you to come in and as a bonus nurse him. This is a classic case of the tail wagging the dog. If you let him cry a few minutes longer each time, then he will go back to his normal routine. As it is, he is teaching you a whole new routine.

Reply:At different times throught the years, kids change their schedules! They don't all keep the same schedule or we would all sleep 20 hours a day even as adults. Chances are he will eventually change his schedule again and maybe it will be one that will suit all of you. As far as the naps go...take them! You are a mom and you deserve them! You have to take care of yourself and you need the rest! No harm there! I have an almost 3 year old and a 12 month old and they BOTH get up through the night still and I have to get up with my hubby at 5 and get him off to work. I don't get much sleep! I take naps with my kids too sometimes....more lately than I used too!
Reply:When babies teeth thier sleep schedules gets all out of wack. All I can suggest to you is to try to put him back to sleep when he wakes up. Let him know that when he is in his room it is sleep time. (Do not take him out of his room to put him to sleep). Also, if his teething really is not allowing him to fall asleep, give him some infant tylonol and gripe water. This will give both of you a good nights rest.

Is there a correct way to prune a palm tree?
I have 3 queen palms and 2 Sago palms. is there a correct way to cut off the dead leaves? Also when should one take the outer skin or husk off? (I am not sure what to call this.)

My Mini Pin Pin still poops in house&chews everything he's a rescuse dog-3 mo's ago & breaks out of his crate.
Adopted him 3 mo'sago he's now 1 yr old, I need HELP before I have to give him away he's eaten carpet, phones, shoes even his food bowls, after he dumps the food out. He's very sweet and non agressive and gets along well with other animals.

I also have a Min Pin...she is a chewer. Don't get discouraged with her. You have to train her not to do these things. Make sure she has plenty of toys to play with, they are a very high strung breed. As for the pooping, never put a dogs nose in it, that is not how you train an animal. Be sure to take her out, and praise her when she does her business outside (give her a treat etc.). The food issue, mine does it too, I have no clue why they do this, but I switched the brand and she no longer dumps it out. These dogs feel the need to have alot of attention, and if they do not get it...well they become destructive. Good luck with her, and remember to be patient, they are a hard breed to train.

Reply:Does this sound familiar...A dog with separation anxiety will, within 10 min of being left alone, defacate or urinate in the house, engage in destructive behavior, and begin to cry/whine/bark. This is unfortunately rather common in dogs who've had multiple homes. Is the behavior you're describing happening only when he's left alone/confined? If yes, it's probably separation anxiety and the resulting behaviors are acutally his response to the panic he feels when left. Try not to be angry with him. Get help from a vet with a behavior interest/experience. Good luck!

Landscape/Gardening Question?
Anybody out there know if I pull up my Sago Palm here in FL. to move it with us to Charlotte, NC., will it survive ok up there? Or are the winters too cold up there? Remember.... Sago Palms are not true palms.

What do you do with coffee grounds or tea leaves after you've made coffee or tea?
I've known that coffee grounds were good for some plants for years, but didn't know much else. Recently my husband read an article about using coffee grounds to help treat a scale insect on our Sago. So, we are now saving all coffee grounds to use on our Sago and intend to also mulch around all our acid loving plants with them. I've also learned that tea leaves help enrich soil and aid with preventing some pests...so I'm saving tea leaves too.
Do you toss your leftover coffee grounds and tea leaves? Do you use the grounds/tea leaves? If so, how do you use the grounds or leaves?

Reply:I put them both in my plants as you have stated, it also keeps cats from using your garden as a litter box. As far as scale goes on a sago, scale comes from the soil and the soil must be treated to cure it. Malathion and dish soap work wonders, till up the soil and treat it. I would also wait until late in the afternoon and drench the plant with it and then cover the plant over night. You may have to do this several times to cure the scale
Reply:We use them on some plants and we used to compost but we no longer grow enough to deal with it. The tea leaves I have at times put in a pouch of a soft wash cloth and used for my puffy eyes. Lately a lot of the coffee grounds have just been thrown away

Reply:I no longer drink coffee and tea, so I don't have any grounds or leaves to dispose of. And if I did, I would just toss them in the trash because I now live in an apartment again (sold my home) and gardening, etc., is not an option.
I discovered that (for me anyway) the caffeine in such products is addictive. I used to get occasional headaches and would take headache mecidation for that, but later learned that the headaches were a withdrawal symptom from caffeine. In other words, if I drank coffee one day, but not the next, I would get a headache. The headache medication which contains caffeine would appease my symptoms. Now that I no longer drink coffee or tea, I have no use for headache medications. Haven't swallowed a tylenol in 30 years. I shared that information with my brother-in-law and he told me "Ya, well you're not married anymore." Hmm, I thought my sister was such a sweetheart and most likely incapable of giving him headaches. Anyway, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that my no longer having a spouse might be a contibuting factor to my no longer having headaches. But I think the caffeine was the real culprit.
I'm not suggesting that you give up coffee or other caffeine containing products (such as chocolate) if they don't cause you any grief. Just sharing my experience with you.
Oh. Not suggesting you get rid of your spouse either. That was my brother-in-law talking.

Reply:Coffee grounds are great on roses along with egg shells and cow manure. However, I can only use so many of them so they sometimes get pitched. I did read about a new use. In order to dispose of old or unused medicine and not let it get into the ground water by flushing it or putting it in the dump, you crush the pills, add a little water to dissolve them and put them into a zip lock bag filled with coffee grounds which absorbe the liquid. They wont pollute the environment.

As far as scale goes on a sago, scale comes from the soil and the soil must be treated to cure it. Malathion and dish soap work wonders, till up the soil and treat it. I would also wait until late in the afternoon and drench the plant with it and then cover the plant over night. You may have to do this several times to cure the scale
Reply:We use them on some plants and we used to compost but we no longer grow enough to deal with it. The tea leaves I have at times put in a pouch of a soft wash cloth and used for my puffy eyes. Lately a lot of the coffee grounds have just been thrown away

Reply:I no longer drink coffee and tea, so I don't have any grounds or leaves to dispose of. And if I did, I would just toss them in the trash because I now live in an apartment again (sold my home) and gardening, etc., is not an option.
I discovered that (for me anyway) the caffeine in such products is addictive. I used to get occasional headaches and would take headache mecidation for that, but later learned that the headaches were a withdrawal symptom from caffeine. In other words, if I drank coffee one day, but not the next, I would get a headache. The headache medication which contains caffeine would appease my symptoms. Now that I no longer drink coffee or tea, I have no use for headache medications. Haven't swallowed a tylenol in 30 years. I shared that information with my brother-in-law and he told me "Ya, well you're not married anymore." Hmm, I thought my sister was such a sweetheart and most likely incapable of giving him headaches. Anyway, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that my no longer having a spouse might be a contibuting factor to my no longer having headaches. But I think the caffeine was the real culprit.
I'm not suggesting that you give up coffee or other caffeine containing products (such as chocolate) if they don't cause you any grief. Just sharing my experience with you.
Oh. Not suggesting you get rid of your spouse either. That was my brother-in-law talking.

Reply:Smart woman. In Starbucks they give away used coffee grounds for anyone that wants to use it for their garden. Also tea is very good for roses and ferns. Good for you.

Reply:Coffee grounds are great on roses along with egg shells and cow manure. However, I can only use so many of them so they sometimes get pitched. I did read about a new use. In order to dispose of old or unused medicine and not let it get into the ground water by flushing it or putting it in the dump, you crush the pills, add a little water to dissolve them and put them into a zip lock bag filled with coffee grounds which absorbe the liquid. They wont pollute the environment.

Green tea I keep sometimes, and pat my face with the cold tea (after I have drunk some - you realize how good this is for you right?) it is good for the skin, refreshes helps with blotches and cleanses from the outside as well as the inside when you drink it.
I take the seeds of Avocado's and grow them/ Have a 7ft one from way back. Also I have a large Mango tree grown from seed.

I am trying to prevent mold from growing on my Sago Palm...?
It is inside our poorly lit apartment now so it wont freeze outside. Now it grows mold on it. I keep it in front of a window - doesnt help much. How do I keep the mold off?

Are you sure it's mold and not scale? Sagos are very prone to scale. Horticultural oil sprayed on the trunk and all leaflets will keep it under control.
If it is mold, you will have to move it into a sunnier, drier area and not water it so much.
