Is there a correct way to prune a palm tree?

I have 3 queen palms and 2 Sago palms. is there a correct way to cut off the dead leaves? Also when should one take the outer skin or husk off? (I am not sure what to call this.)

Use a sharp knife like a machete to trip the dead leaves from the bottom close to the trunk. You can trim any brown skin that is hanging loose with scissors, but it is best to leave the rest on the trunk for protection from the sun and elements.
Reply:I have several palm trees including a sago. they are all potted and spend the winter months under glass.

when the weather warms up they go outside and i cut off any dead leaves close to the trunk, in fact the trunk is built up of the

stubs of the dead leaves from previous years.
