Gardening question- potted sago palm is dying, any suggestions?

Without more info it is difficult to tell. It is outside, right? How often are you watering it? In my experience Sago palms get overwatered very easily. If the leaves are turning yellow that could be it. Is it in the sun or part shade and in what climate? It could fry in the hottest sun. Is it the lower leaves or the middle new growth? The lower leaves will die and need to be cut off as in all palms. Only new growth occurs from the middle.

Good luck :-)

In my experience, it is more likely suffering from OVER watering than UNDER watering. Let it get pretty dry in between waterings (if it's a large sago, let the top two inches of dirt get dry before you water next).

When you water it, water it thoroughly... but leave it alone until it dries again!!

Happy gardening!
Reply:Potted Hmmmmm Maybe hide the key to the liquor cabinet.
Reply:wash it off with some water ,try some miracle grow,is there a chance a dog p'd on it or any toxic chemical came in contact?maybe try another bigger pot with new soil in it,GL
Reply:Mine went thru what looked like dying- it needed water. After a few months in the sun with intermittent water it is looking fine-- the center rib of the fronds is going yellow-- rest is green-- any advice from answerers?
Reply:water it
Reply:I have several in pots and they looked like they were dying and I just put miracle grow on them once a week and several new plants came up. In pots they don't like a lot of sun from my experience.
Reply:It could be over watering. Or, it could be too little watering. Maybe roots bound. It's hard to say. You should take it out from the pot, and see if the soil is too dry, too wet, or roots is all bounded.

  1. I have a 5 ft. Potted sago in a pot here in Omaha ne. It's now goin into spring an I was only watering every 2 to 3 weeks. The trunk on mine is probably 12" round an in a 15 or so round pot its kind of not centered In the pot and the side that's closer to the pot is drying in the middle of the outer fronds too. I'm thinkn its just from underwatering I hope too
